Training for the big walk

The Camino del Norte follows the coast of Spain from Irun to Santiago de Compostela. It is approximately 800 kilometres (or 500 miles) and should take about 5-6 weeks to complete. On average, I will be walking about 28kms per day – but each day is completely different. The map that we will be following is below (click to zoom in):

As I am incredibly unfit and not ashamed to tell everyone, I have spent the last few months training with my boyfriend (who is incredibly fit). I’ve been using S-Health on my Samsung Galaxy to track my steps, distance and water drunk every single day. I’ve been trying to do between 8-10kms per day, with massive walks on the weekend.

Last weekend I walked a total of 35 kilometres over Saturday and Sunday. Today (being Saturday), I somehow walked 30 kilometres – taking the Merri Creek Trail through to The Yarra Trail and into the city.

I bet you think it looks easy, huh? Well, you’re wrong!

It was hard.

Right now, I am completely and utterly exhausted and I’m not sure if my feet will be able to carry me to the toilet. However, I must somehow move, because I am going out to dinner (terrible mistake, definitely don’t make dinner plans after walking for almost 7 hours – yep, it took me that long).

Now, to the good parts of the walk.

The Merri Creek trail is actually pretty great, all of the bicycles-riders ting their bells while passing, there’s a zillion cute kids, great spicy smells from Ceres and the best part – walking past the Collingwood Children’s Farm.

The below photo was taken around Northcote – pretty psyched, feeling great and we were making good time:

I will feel proud of myself tomorrow, when I look back at what I achieved, right now I’m in a world of pain. I just hope that when we do the Camino, that I will be able to stick with it and finish it.

Until next time, buenos noches,

Miss Adventure
